Setting up a Printer in Linux

Below are the basic steps necessary for setting up a printer on a workstation running Linux.  Each Linux distribution is a bit different in the way system settings are handled.  The specific procedure for your version of Linux may be somewhat different.

For a list of central printers in the department and general information about printing in the CSE department, see the printing page.

Ubuntu 11.04 (Gnome user interface):

  • Bring up the System Settings window (search for it under the Ubuntu icon in the upper left corner of the screen or access it directly under the power icon in the upper right corner of the screen)

  • If the Installable Options window comes up, you may to indicate optional parts that are included with this printer.  This may be confusing as it may not be clear exactly which options are available for a given printer.  Please feel free to contact CSEHelp for assistance with these questions.  For all of the department central printers, check the Duplex Unit check box.  For Memory Configuration, choose 80MB for B&W printers and 256MB for color printers.  Most of the department printers have a 500-Sheet Paper Feeder, so you may check that if it is a check box or select 500-Sheet Input Tray for Optional Tray 3.  Click Forward after the appropriate options have been selected.
  • In the Describe Printer window,  enter the name of the printer in the Printer Name field (e.g. p1234-b1) and click Apply
  • When you are asked if you would like to print a test page, click Print Test Page to confirm that the printer is working as expected
